Frequently asked questions

What is wampum?

Wampum is the inner shell of the quahog clam, found along the shores of the Northeast. Its signature hues — ranging from ivory to deep violet — are naturally occurring and cannot be duplicated. Each shell holds a unique pattern shaped by the sea, the sand, and time itself.

For centuries, wampum has held deep cultural significance for Indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands. It has been used not only as adornment, but also as a sacred medium for storytelling, record-keeping, and ceremony. At Selkies’ Sea Creations, we acknowledge and respect this heritage.

While our work is not Indigenous-made, it is guided by a deep reverence for the material. Each piece is hand-gathered, shaped, and polished in a slow, intentional process that lets the shell speak for itself.

Wampum is not simply something we work with.
It’s something we listen to.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes, we welcome custom commissions.

If you have a specific vision, a meaningful way in which you'd like a shell transformed, or simply want a piece made just for you or someone you love, we’re happy to create something bespoke.

Every custom order begins with a conversation — let us know what colors and shapes you like best. From there, we’ll guide you through the process: selecting shells, choosing forms, and shaping a piece that feels personal and enduring.

How should I care for my jewelry?

To preserve the beauty of your Selkies’ piece, we recommend treating it with care, just as you would any natural material.

Wampum is durable but organic — shaped by the ocean and sensitive to harsh chemicals. Avoid prolonged exposure to water, perfumes, lotions, or abrasive cleaners. A soft, dry cloth is ideal for gently wiping the shell after wear.

Stainless steel is highly resistant to tarnish and wear, making it a low-maintenance and durable option for everyday use. If needed, clean it with mild soap and water, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. It retains its shine without the need for polishing agents.

With simple care, your piece will continue to age beautifully — a lasting reflection of the sea.
